Sally Spedding

Sally was born by the sea near Porthcawl to a Dutch father and Welsh mother. She trained in sculpture both at Manchester College of Art and St. Martin's, London to post-graduate level. Whilst teaching and exhibiting, she won a major international short-story competition and was approached by a top agent who encouraged her to write a novel. Her timeslip thriller, The Fold, set mostly near Montaillou in France, is still under wraps, but she later secured a two-book deal with Macmillan, and in 2001, Wringland, set on the haunted Fens was published. Cloven, with two time-frames followed this, then A Night With No Stars in 2004. Next, and again set in France, Prey Silence was published in 2006, with Come and Be Killed set in the Malvern Hills apprearing in 2007. Strangers Waiting, her first collection of short stories exploring themes of betrayal, duplicity and fear was published in 2008, and in 201, her chiller thriller, Cold Remains, set in 1946 and 2009, mainly in rural Carmarthenshire. Malediction, her noir thriller set in France, was published in September 2012. All her titles have attracted foreign interest and many translation rights have been sold.
Sally's short stories have appeared in magazines and anthologies too nnumerous to list here. She has won several awards including the H.E. Bates Award, and has regularly been selected for CWA anthologies. The latest, The Mammoth Book of Best British Crime (Vol 10) (ed. Maxim Jakubowski) to be published on 21st Febraury 2013 includes the shocking Tea for Two. She is also a prizewinning poet.
Sally is an experienced adjudicator, speaker and workshop leader at many literary festivals and writing conferences, where she enjoys meeting aspiring writers and helping them get published. She is a manuscript appraiser for the CWA and regularly assesses work sent by all those who have stayed in touch. This has firmed up her belief that new, original talent is too often overlooked for the safe bet. She lives in Carmarthenshire, UK.
